Re: Dominguez
It comes originally from Spain, from the first name "Domingo". Like Domenico in Italy or Dominique in France, Domingo is very common in Spain and spanish-speaking countries.
Now the surname Dominguez has spread in USA too.

They are all Latin based and mean "to dominate", which basically means "Lord" and was a name associated with Jesus Christ.

In fact "domingo" in spanish means "Sunday" and Dimanche and Domenica are respectively the french and italian word for Sunday.
In Italian Domenica is also the feminin variant of Domenico.

The original meaning of Dominikus as a Christian name in the very sense was "dedicated to the Lord (Jesus Christ"); later it was also used for children born on a Sunday, the "day of the Lord" (cf. Rev 10,1). By the way Columbus discovered the isle of Domenica on a Sunday.
