Morgenster
Without googling, how many people here would know the meaning of the surname Morgenster just by looking at it? Also, is this a nice surname, or hideous?

I have heard the name Morgenstern, a German name, and this is the German word for "morning star". Maybe the n got lost? Those people in Ellis Island were writing names in English by how the arriving immigrants pronounced them. Many European names were corrupted because of this.

No, the n did not get lost and the name was not corrupted. "Morgenster" is Dutch and litterally means "morning star" (I am Dutch myself). "Morgenstern" is the German variant with the same meaning. Marina

Morgen means "morning" in German, Danish and Dutch I believe. The ster part sounds like "star" but I'm not positive. Does the name mean morning star when put together in German, Dutch or Danish?I think it is nice sounding and it's not a surname I've actually heard people having.

In modern Dutch Morgen means 'morning' or 'tomorrow' and Ster means 'star'. So for a Dutch person Morgenster is 'morning star', I'm not sure if that's the etymological origin of the last name though.
