Surname Hoy
I was curious if anyone knew any information about the surname "Hoy". I can't tell you much about the ethnic background, as my father has passed away and never really knew his background. He thought it was possibly Finnish or Irish. Anyone know where this name may have originated? His family had pale skin and darker hair, if that helps at all. Thanks :)"There's nothing you can teach me

More likely Irish; Hoy is found in Northern Ireland as another version of Hoey, whoch can be for Ó hAoidh (O'Hea) or Ó hEochaidh (O'Haughey).
Hoy is also an English surname "Middle Dutch hoey 'cargo ship'. Metonymic for a sailor" (Reaney and Wilson, "Dictionary...").
