Minchew/ Minchev (минчев)
I am having the worst time trying to find the definition or meaning of Minchew. Most websites point me in the direction of Bulgarian. Only one site defines it as Dominican. The name is popular in Russia, apparently, according to some sources. I would just like to find a definitive meaning, and possibly a true origin of this name. Thank you!

Minchev (Минчев, heard Meen-cheff, transliterated in various ways: Minchev, Mintchew, Mintcheff, etc) is a very often family name in Bulgaria. There is a personal male name Mina, very rare now, name day on November 11th, please seehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Menas
In Bulgarian, Mincho (Минчо) is in fact a diminutive form for Mina, however it is preferred as a personal male name since Mina seems to be female in Bulgarian. The patronym from Mincho is Minchev-Mincheff, a very often family name in Bulgaria. The female form is Mincheva.

The origin of Minchew/Minshew is English. It's a variant of Minshull which comes from the placenames Church Minshull and Minshull Vernon in Cheshire, recorded as Munschulf in medieval documents. The place-name probably derives from the Old English personal name Mann, Monn + Old English scylfe ‘shelf, ledge’.

Thanks, Lepic for the quick response! If you don't mind my asking, do you have a resource? I'd love to know where you found it.

You'll find the origin of Minchew in The Oxford Dictionary of Family Names in Britain and Ireland (OUP, 2016). You can also trace Minchew back to Minshew at tinyurl.com/y9782gj2 and thence to Minshull at tinyurl.com/y89lpkcw.
