My first guess on origin would be France, because of the -aire ending, but I'm no genius. Could it be a French form of another surname?
On the meaning, I'm just as hazy unless the "mar" has something to do with the word "sea". I do not know what "-laire" means at all.
Any help would be great. Thanks!

The person with this name can trace his heritage back to many generations, but all live in Scotland. Could this name be an exception to the rule and be fron Scotland? That really makes no sense to me, but as I said, I'm no genius.

This surname comes is quite common in Belgium and also known in France. It comes from the old French "marlière" a word that means "marl pit".
