The person with this name can trace his heritage back to many generations, but all live in Scotland. Could this name be an exception to the rule and be fron Scotland? That really makes no sense to me, but as I said, I'm no genius.-Seda*

This surname comes is quite common in Belgium and also known in France. It comes from the old French "marlière" a word that means "marl pit".
