I have no argument with Lucille since I do not know the meaning of the surname SEXTON. However, I did look it up in “New Dictionary of American Family Names,” by Elsdon C. Smith, published 1973. Page 461 has two definitions, the first being ". . . an under-officer of a church . . ." and the other being a variant of SAXTON, which is defined on page 448, referring to place names in England.

SEXTON is also discussed on page 189 of “English Surnames : Their Sources and Significations,” by Charles Wareing Bardsley. Published 1873, reprinted 1968.
