Archivesmy surname-I'd like to know what it means
My surname is Karp. It was changed when my grandfather and his brother immigrated to Canada (after living in Poland and escaping the Holocaust) I know what the original name [Schwartz] means, but I'd liked to know Karp.

Hi Rachel,
I found out two different meanings of Karp:
1) From the Middle Low German word 'karpe' (carp) as a name for a fish-merchant
2) From the short form of the Greek first name 'Polykarp' (Greek 'polýs' = many, much + Greek 'karpós' = fruit)
