According to the French site: www.jtosti.com/noms this surname comes from the Northern Frenche region of Britany (Bretagne).
The origin is not really clear: it could come from the verb "chicaner"
that is to quibble or to cavil. So in fact a nickname for a lawyer or a person who works in a judicial sphere.
