the origin of the name Yawn
My last name is Yawn and I would like to know what country it is from. I have heard that it could be Dutch, Chinese, or Irish. I am Irish and Indian on one side of my father's family, the Thompsons. On the other side, the family only goes back a few generations starting at my father Robert Hollis Yawn to Hollis Robert Yawn (my grandfather) to Charles Yawn which is where the line ends. I would like information of the Yawn name or family of Charles Yawn who lived in Alabama during the early 1900's. Thanks.

I have heard Scottish as well. The original spelling may have been Yaun. Also, the Wiregrass region of Georgia and Florida,or Beaufort S.C. are good starting locations to look way back.

The surname Yawn does not exist in Scotland. It's an alteration of the German name Jahn 'John' (see tinyurl.com/y874a9sd). Your ancestor was Swiss German as you can see at tinyurl.com/y78vb6jt.
