Polish, probably from a place-name, Grabow, there are at least three in Poland. The place-name derives from a tree name, hornbeam in English. I wouldn't know one if it fell on me.

Perhaps it is akin to the Russian name Grabóvskij (from hrab = beech-tree), seen on page 287 of UNBEGAUN, B.O. "Russian Surnames," published in 1972.Reg Niles
