De la would be the French spelling, suggesting it's from a place name. It could be an affectation, the particle "de" was indicative of noble status under the monarchy. Nowadays most people affecting the "particule" are phoneys.

Thank you. I am actually interested in Vatble of Martinique who apparently changed their name. It is proving to be quite interesting.

I am related to the Vatble's of Martinique and i am not aware of any name change having taken place. The name can currently be traced back to Amiens in France to Louis Vatble around 1708 and is the fore father of the Vatble, in France, Martinique and South Africa.
