ethnic origin of malarsie
Hi,
Can anyone help finding the origin of my surname Malarsie?

It looks French to me but I can't find it as a French surname or place name, though a fair number of French surnames begin with "Mal".
Here's some wild speculation; in Sweden there is a lake called Malar (Mälar), and the Swedish for lake is sjo (sjö). If Mälarsjö existed as a surname (and I've no proof that it does) it would likely undergo change in an English-speaking environment.

We've always believed the name is Italian although the e on the end is not typical of Italy. A geneologist told one of my family members the name likely originated in the northern part of the country near the border with France where the e wouldn't be uncommon but I've no proof to confirm that.

The first Malarsies in the US were from either Austria or Hungary according to the information at tinyurl.com/ycenpd4s. Those two countries formed a constitutional union before they emigrated as you can see at tinyurl.com/onhagn5.
