Where does the name Vogt come from?

I'm half German, and I don't think Vogt its very German. I have never heard this name before, never knew it existsed so I might be wrong. Vogt, if German would be pronounced Foh-gt. Umm... I can't really explain... It reminds me of the German word for bird - Vogel. Don't ask why. Hope this helps!!

A short check at:http://telefonbuch.de/gives you some 21,000 hits for this surname in Germany (and you can add a few more VOGTs for married couples).VOGEL is a completely different matter, but even more common (some 27,000 hits).

VOGT is a a fairly popular surname in Germany. It means "reeve" (this is what I found in an online dictionary) and is derived from the Latin "vocatus" ("called").
