etherington.....mystery name
i have been trying to find the orgin and/or meaning of the surname Etherington. i think it is a welsh name but i am not sure. it is a veriant of Hetherington, if that helps. i would love to know if anyone knows of how i can obtain any information on this or if anyone is an etherington themselves, seeing as this name isnt very common. can anyone help?

You're right about it being a version of Hetherington, but it's not Welsh. Hetherington is a Cumbrian place name and surname, Etherington is, in my opinion, a Yorkshire version. The E- version appears in York in 1524. There was a Yorkshire landed family, the Etheringtons of Ebberston near Pickering, and another landed family, the Etheringtons of Driffield in East Yorkshire, which was a branch of Ebberston. You may be able to find them in genealogical works such as Burke's "Landed Gentry", or in histories of the areas mentioned.
