I think it should be Sertucha, Zertucha, Sertutxa, Zertutxa, (these are some of the spellings found in Spain)and it is basque, from Gatica (Gatika) in Vizcaya (Bizkaia). It means a wood or copse made up by holly oaks (also known as holm or evergreen oaks). In other words it is equivalent to Hollywood. Fancy that! Also one Francisco de Sertucha Basaldua went from Spain to America in the beginning of the 18th century as captain of the dragoons of the presidio in Veracruz, Mexico.

I've been searching for so long to find our roots as well. I was told our last name was somehow changed from Zertuche to Zartuche, but we have no proof of that. I've looked and looked but I just don't know where else to look to find out. We've always believed our name came from Spain as well.I'd love to know more if anyone can find anything else.

I think it might be Basque and formerly Sartuche. Zartuche and Sartuche are found today in Mexico, and in that part of the USA that was once Mexican. Spanish sources don't recognise the name, but I've found a reference to an ETA (i.e., Basque)militant named Sartuche. Also the family search website records the baptism in Bilbao of the son of one Juan de Sartuche. Although it's not conclusive evidence that "de" suggests that Sartuche is a place name, perhaps a farm. The -che ending might represent eche, which is a common component of Basque place names and surnames and.
