Reaney and Wilson give a possible origin of the surname Codd as an old English word for a bag, and suggest that this could refer to someone with a belly like a bag (?)
They do give other possible explanations.

Belly like a bag? not convinced of that one...
A codd was a leather draw string bag (various in size) that was nearly always was used for either or valued items, hence why i suspect it might be a money lender or man of money?Thanks for the thought, Jim
