In Dutch, this surname is from the word schout which means "bailiff, sheriff". Often the surname comes from houses called Scholten, because once a 'schout' lived there. Later, the family living in the house used the name as their surname. Another possibility is that is patronymic from the firstnames Scholte, Scholto or Schelto. These names are from to the word schout as well.
