Flaig name origins and meaning
Hi, my name is Renee Leighton, my maiden name is Flaig. I have tried for years to find the origins of my family name, without success. Little is know of my great-grandfather's origins, he was born in the US, but no one ever was sure where. Possibly Wisconsin, but maybe Iowa. Needless to say I have very little information about him beyond his birthday and date of death. His name was Michael Flaig and he's buried near Walnut Grove MN. Any information anyone could give me would be appreciated. Thanks.

Flaig is a dialectal variant of German Fliege 'fly'. It's the nickname of a meddlesome or frivolous person. The surname is very common in Germany as you can see at http://www.verwandt.de/karten/absolut/flaig.html. You can check out your probable ancestry in the US at http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=fdjuhnke1&id=I11013

German, probably the same in meaning as the surname Fleig, but what that meaning is I don't know.
