Question about 'war names'
I know that French soldiers often took/were given a new name, 'nom de guerre', and that these later became established surnames. I also know that Swedish soldiers were given new names in a similar way (describing personality or physical characteristics) and that these are now surnames as well. I wonder if this, to give noms de guerre, has ever been practice in English-speaking countries. I would also like to know if there are other countries where noms de guerre have been used and where they are now established last names.Thanks________________________________________________________________________________________________________
