i believe that the first component is from the German word Klinge meaning "ravine, gorge", so the whole was probably a placename or a farm's name. There are three placenames called Kling.

hey im sorry it took such a long time time to reply over the years in or family history we had some poeople with that spelling my Dad acuallt got the change to talk to an old timer that knew his dad a a kid and sayed hey always thought his last name was clinpost..over the years theres been Clingfast Clingfoot, Clingford Clingfort. but your also find the same person somewhere else as Clingfost witch is my Surname
