There is also a surname, Kreiten, and both it and Kreten appear to be based in the Rhineland. Maybe they are versions of the same name. Unfortunately neither name seems to have attracted the attention of students of surnames (maybe Andy knows better). There is also a German surname, Kreit, which is a word that means "quarrel". No firm conclusions to be drawn from any of this.
