HiI'm British but my grandmother was a Cabasso and was born in Israel. It is my understanding that our name comes from Portugal. Regards

Cabasso is a Jewish name but its origin is Tunesian so I can't see how it could be related to Cabaço. My knowledge of Portuguese is minimal so I can't really make out what they say at
http://desciclo.pedia.ws/wiki/Cabaço. Could this be a plausible source for the surname?

Most definitely not. Desciclopedia is a crack/humour website with lots of slang, sorta like Uncyclopedia or Enciclopedia Dramatica if you're familiar with those. It's not to be taken seriously, and it's not for people who mind swearing either.

According to the Oxford Names Companion this is "a nickname for a fat man or a heavy drinker", and is from the Portuguese for "gourd", though that word is slightly different in my dictionary.
