Massie is probably from one of the places named Massie, Le Massie or La Massie. However, if you mean Massié, that would be a variant of Massier which is derived from masse 'mace'.

Thanks for the reply. There's no accent on the E. The name Massie looks similar to Marseille. Any connection? I heard that a branch of the family comes from there. According to Wikipedia, it was formerly called Massalia.

I don't know the origin of Massie as a placename so I can't say for sure whether it's related to Marseille. My guess is that they have different origins given that there are so many places in France that begin with Mass- and that have nothing to do with each other etymologically.
