English, place-name Lancashire. The Manx connection may have something to do with the Stanleys, an important Lancashire family who ruled (?) the island for a long period. They are known to have brought over retainers from their Lancashire lands. Is there a "family plaid"? No, no, no! But I'm sure if you ever visit Edinburgh some slick salesman will persuade you that there is.
