The information I have is that it derives from a place called Hoathley in Sussex. It's believed to signify a clearing where heather grows. You can be sure it's English and from a place-name.

I have heard that the name came from Hoathley. East and West Hoathley certainly are in Sussex, England. I spent an entire afternoon once trampsing around the old churchyard trying to find a name. i was unsuccessful. i will keep looking.
