My surname
I have recently been doing a lot of research into the surname Luce. It's a very rare last name. The basic consensus and general message I seem to be getting about the name is that it is of Norman origin and reached England during the Conquest (1066 and WIliam the Conquerer). I am just wondering how true may this be? Just because it's a French/Norman name does it mean it really did come from Normandy? I have friends who bear Italian names but are of purely English ancestry! Furthermore are there any variants of this surname that could have been misspelt, to make Luce, during the times when many were illiterate (I.e could my surname truly be Luke or Lewis e.t.c)? English heritage is something I'm very proud of, and I'm simply curious as to where this name derives from originally. Any help is greatly appreciated. Please get back as soon as possible, many thanks
