Lavis
Does anyone know where the surname 'lavis' derives from considering my ancestors with this surname lived in Devon. This makes us think France due to the geography and the word itself. I would be grateful of any additional information.

Lavis is a variant of Lavers which is derived from Laver. The latter comes from Anglo-Norman French laver 'washerman, laundryman' (< Old French laver 'to wash').
