The following quote places the name in (Bosnia-)Hercegovina, and makes it the same as Toholj. Unfortunately its meaning remains unexplained. You will also note that the -lj ending occurs in another surname - Seselj. That is a patronymic ending in some parts of the former Yugoslavia. I didn't make a note, but I think the source of the quote was www.bosnia.org I have already written about the fact that many surnames from Herzegovina are common to more than one of its peoples: Seselj - Stjepan and Vojislav; Maric - Jozo and Enver; Pervan - Tahir and Tomislav; Toholj/Tolj - Ivan and Miroslav, and so on and so forth.
