Message: "Surname Foss" - Behind the Name

I have been trying to locate the origin of the name Foss. We have been told it is a Scandinavian name, but wonder about German. Is there a good search engine to just locate the origin of surnames. We are not looking to find geneology or paid for service. Only wonder about the names origin.

Foss=water falls ...related to faucet ...My wife's Norwegian, the term is all over their geography ...

Sean thanks. I did find some other information that pointed to Norwegian. Foss is the only record we have for my wife. She was adopted and those records are sealed. She was adopted into a Swedish surname and they were told at the time that she was Scandinavian. So, it is possible Norwegian. Thanks again.
