The name is a derivative of "Tonnel" which is from the Old English Language word "tunhild" - "tonhild". loosely meaning tun-town hild- slope, so from this we can derive that Tunnell,Tonnel,tunhild, tonhild. falls into the category of "place names" that is names that people took that were relevant to where they lived in this case it is "the dweller near or at the town slope".
