Sevier
Can anyone tell me what the origin of the name Sevier is? Everywhere I look is so vague, it's aggravating."In chess, you kill only the king. In war, thousands die."[I hope this saying isn't already taken. I made it up myself.]

The following link provides a clue, in connecting the name to De Xavier. Xavier, as you may know, means Saviour. http://www.geocities.com/heartland/hills/4200/sevier.htm

There is also an English surname, Sevier, one of several spellings. It's occupational, meaning "sievewright", i.e., a maker of sieves.

By the way, Xavier derives from the Basque surname Etxaberri, don't ask me how.
