German is the
Germanic language spoken in Germany, Austria, parts of Switzerland, and other regions in central Europe. It is spoken in a spectrum of
dialects, with Standard German being descended from the
Old High German of southern Germany.
German is sometimes called High German to distinguish it from the Low German languages spoken in the north.
