Meaning & History

Combination of Old English bakke "spine, back" and man "man". In Swedish, the first element is more likely to be derived from Swedish backe "hill", and in German the first element can be derived from German backen "to bake".

Backman can also be a variant of Swedish Bäckman or German Bachmann.
