Meaning & History
Of Anglo-Saxon origin and is of two parts, brown (descriptive) and lowe (topographical). Lowe derives from Old English hlaw meaning "a small hill", and so the name was possibly given to a family living on a small hill covered with bracken, giving it a brown colour.
