The most well known bearer of the name was John Endecott (c. 1589-1665) first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, as well as an English colonial magistrate and soldier. Endecott was born in Chagford, Devon, England. In the 1990s a 16th century building, now a meeting hall, in Chagford, Devon was named in John Endecott's honor.
