SOURCE: Occupation
USAGE: Dutch
Meaning & History
From an abbreviation of jonckheer "young lord" (see also JONCKHEER). This surname has its origin in the Late Middle Ages. In those days, joncker was a noble designation (never an actual noble title) for (young) noblemen who had no title but did hold important positions in society. It is thus rather similar to the noble designation of jonckheer, but not quite the same.
