Meaning & History
There are several theories to the meaning of this name. One suggests Ossetian origin meaning "son of the herder" from the Ossetian word дзуг (dzug) meaning "herd, flock, troop", while it may also be derived from Kabardian (Circassian) дзыгъуэ (ʒəġ°ă) meaning "mouse" or дзыгъуэшхуэ (ʒəġ°ăšx°ă) "rat". It may also be from an Old Georgian word meaning "steel", a word meaning "garbage", or from the name of the village of ჯუღაანი (Jughani) in eastern Georgia combined with the suffix შვილი (švili) "child, offspring".
The most notable bearer was Joseph Stalin (1878-1953), born Ioseb Jughashvili, a Soviet political revolutionary and the Premier of the Soviet Union from 1941-1953.
