Meaning & History
Kraanvelt was a surname granted to descendants of Toomas (b. 1686) and Kai (b. 1692)who lived in Kure farm, under Kiiu estate in Kuusalu parish, Estonia. Estonian peasantry were only granted surnames in the 1800's. Between 1935-38 many Estonians changed their surnames and for some Kraanvelt became Kallang, Kalmet, Kalvet and Kurepalu. Another known variation is Granfeldt, this was due to the mispelling of the name Kraanvelt which was adopted. However, it is believed to have been an isolated case and unrelated to the surname Granfeldt which was pre-existing.
