Meaning & History

Sir Stuart Edmond Pearks (1875–1931) served as the Chief Commissioner of the North-West Frontier Province of British India from 1930 until 1931. Sourced from Wikipedia.

One of my ancesters is recorded as having the surname Pearkes, but I have no idea where this came from. He lived in Hertfordshire around 1800. I have not yet looked in the records to determine whether this was at all a common name in that area.
