Means "from Salzwedel, Germany". Salzwedel, Germany is also the equivalent to the old Salzwedel, Prussia. Salzwedel is the modern version of Soltwedel. Salz is the Old Saxon term meaning "salt" and wedel is the Old Saxon term meaning "ford". There is also dispute that wedel could mean "field" or even "well".
