Meaning & History
German and Yiddish word that means "screamer" or "shrieker" or "crier", perhaps an occupational name for a town crier. There are two main branches of people with the name: Lutherans from Bavaria, and Ashkenazi Jews from the area of the Austro-Hungarian Empire formerly known as Galicia, which is today in southwestern Ukraine.
