Meaning & History

An occupational name for someone who laid wooden tiles, or shingles on roofs, from an agent derivative of Middle English schingle ‘shingle’.

Found mainly in England's westerly counties, such as Staffordshire, Cheshire and Lancashire, it is the equivalent of German Schindler, for which it sometimes an anglicized spelling.
