Meaning & History

Habitual surname from Włodawa, Poland. First seen in a 1806 revision list of the city Kobryn (Grodno Guberniya), now Kobryn Belarus.

Many variants, all of which could have 1-2 of the W's switched to V and/or 1-2 of the O/A switched to A/O. I is used in Europe while Y is used in the USA (i.e Vladowsky or Wlodavski).
