Meaning & History
Modern coinage, derived from Greek ξυλον (xylon) "wood, forest" combined with Greek ανδρος (andros) "of a man". The latter element is the genitive of Greek ανηρ (aner) "man". This was the pseudonym adopted by Renaissance humanist Wilhelm Holtzman, intended to be a Greek translation of his German surname. Latinizing and hellenizing surnames was then a popular custom, and the name change was thought to evoke classical antiquity.
