Description: At the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, he placed second (and thus won the silver medal) at the men's 1500 metres speed skating competition. At the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, he was the winner of the men's 1500 metres speed skating competition. He placed second at the men's 5000 metres speed skating competition, also at the same Winter Olympics. At the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo, he placed second at the men's 10,000 metres speed skating competition.
