This name may originate from the English dialect adjective meaning "boisterous" or "empty headed; half crazy", of which the earliest record dates to 1691, though any further explanation for its origins are unknown. It could also possibly be a variation of the Scottish surname Shand, dating back to the 11th century and of unknown origin. It was used as the protagonist's surname in Irish novelist Laurence Sterne's comedy 'The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman' (1759).
