Meaning & History

Means "town fortified in stone". It comes from a combination of the Old Norse element hallr meaning rock (as in Halle) and of the Old English place name BURTON, denoting a fortified town. Alternately, it could be a pre 7th century name meaning "town by a hazel grove", from the elements haesel meaning hazel, bearu grove, and ton town.
The Canadian author and politician Thomas Chandler Haliburton bears this last name, and Haliburton County in Ontario, Canada is named for him. The Haliburton Society at the University of King's College was also named after him, and is the oldest collegial literary society in North America. He was the first to make reference to hockey in Canada.
