First found in Derbyshire where the family "Cottrell" held a family seat and were granted lands by Duke William of Normandy, their liege lord for their distinguished assistance at the Battle of Hastings, 1066CEA serf or bond tenant who held a cottage by service. Derived from Old English "cote", which means "shelter" or "cottage" and Old French "coterel", a diminutive of "cotier" which means "cottager"
