Hi Soraya,
I too had trouble finding the meaning of our name, until one day I found a guy on line who kept writing e-mails to me in Parsi (thanks to the wonderful yahoo messanger)... I had no idea what he was saying so I clarified the misunderstanding and told him I was Spanish, so he went on and and told me where our name comes from, it comes from Persia and he also told me that many ancient Persian queens were named Soraya, not only that during my research I came across a website that said that Soraya is also a constallation (i wish i still had that source)... I'm still doing more research on that, because I would like to find this so called constellation. It took me almost a year to find all this out but I hope this gives you a start. Please e-mail me if you find anything else.Soraya

I thought I'd read somewhere that Soraya referred to a set of stars that the Western world considers to be part of the Big Dipper. Or it may refer to the Ursa Major constellation itself. I do seem to remember that it was seven stars though. Hope this helps. --CAE

Ursa Major is the formal name of the Big Dipper.

"Sorraia"?Could this Spanish name you're looking for possibly be "Sorraia"? It just occurred to me. "Sorraia" is the name of a species of wild horse which inhabits the south of Spain and Portugal. It takes its name from the River Sorraia. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find out the meaning of the word "Sorraia".-- Nanaea

Sorraia sounds like: “Sa.rey.ya” (سَرِيّا)—an Arabic term that means, “Water Stream” and “Running Rivulet.”

"Soraya" is a Persian name -- a form of the name "Sarah" which means "princess". Perhaps the most famous Soraya of modern times (and perhaps the namesake of your Spanish friend) was Queen Soraya, wife to the last Shah of Iran.-- Nanaea
